Lighting in the Yurt

The yurt started without any permanent lighting. Battery operated lights were the only option. With the addition of propane stove came propane lights that offer a nearly unlimited light source.

There are 4 Humphrey propane lights spaced throughout the yurt. The lights operate off the main propane shutoff and each light has an on/off lever. To light one, turn on the main valve by the futon end table- it's a blue handle sort of hidden in the wooden lattice that makes up the wall. You'll see a piece of copper pipe come up from the outside to the valve and then back down under the yurt to feed other appliances. Once the main shutoff valve is on, turn on the valve on a propane light and wave a lighter underneath the glass. Try to have the lighter lit before you turn on the gas-light switch so you don't have a gas grill poof situation.

Without electricity the kitchen stove runs off propane and a spark iginition system. There is a main propane shutoff by the futon end table- it's a blue handle sort of hidden in the wooden lattice that makes up the wall. You'll see a piece of copper pipe come up from the outside to the valve and then back down under the yurt to feed other appliances. Once the main shutoff valve is on, turn on a burner and then use the starter knob to create a spark to light the burner. Adjust heat as needed.
